White Plains resident Da’Sean Downey, a former defensive end for the University of Massachusetts, has been picked up by the Ravens as an undrafted free agent following the NFL draft last month.
Downey was named to the first-team Eastern College Athletic Conference squad after becoming a full-time starter as a senior. He logged 58 tackles, including 20 tackles for loss and six sacks, the second most tackles for a loss in program history.
Downey played at Woodlands High School in Hartsdale before taking a prep year at the Canterbury School in 2013. He was the defensive MVP of the 2013 New York vs. New Jersey High School Football Classic. Downey was an all-state first team choice after posting 70 tackles, 14 sacks and three forced fumbles as a senior at Woodlands. He was also a defensive MVP at the 2012 Senior Bowl, where he picked up three sacks.
According to the Ravens, Downey - who lines up at 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds - spent time learning from former Green Bay Packers linebacker Ahmad Brooks in advance of the draft. The Ravens have cited his “good athletic, hybrid traits and length.” They are projecting him as a potential developmental edge rusher.
